Do you actually need a car
No, for most contest-week visitors. Yes, if your plan includes Sozopol, several coast towns, or somewhere a transfer and a shuttle do not go.

When a car earns its cost
Sozopol, south of Burgas, has no shuttle coverage planned and is a genuine drive from the northern resorts. A car also pays off if you want to see more than one coast town in a day.
Sozopol is roughly 45 to 55 minutes from the airport and a similar drive from Sunny Beach or Nessebar, and it is the one base in this cluster that a return transfer does not neatly serve for a single day visit. A hired car for a day or two, picked up and dropped at the airport, is often the simplest way to see it without committing to a full-week rental.
What to expect when you rent
A blocked deposit on your credit card, a full-to-full fuel policy, and a car that already carries its road vignette. All three are standard practice, not something specific to Bulgaria.
- Deposit. Rental firms place a hold on a credit card, not a debit card, for the excess amount. It is released after the car is returned undamaged, on the firm's timeline, not instantly.
- Fuel policy. Full to full is standard: collect with a full tank, return it full. Returning it part-empty is charged at a rate that is never in your favour.
- Vignette. Bulgaria charges an electronic road vignette to use motorways and national roads. Hire cars normally already carry one, but confirm it at the desk rather than assuming, since driving without one is an offence.
- Which side of the road. Bulgaria drives on the right, as does the rest of mainland Europe, and hire cars have the steering wheel on the left.
Drink-driving
Bulgaria's legal blood alcohol limit for driving is low, and enforcement is strict. The safest rule for a visitor is the same as in a zero-tolerance country: do not drink at all before driving.
Roadside checks are routine rather than exceptional, particularly around towns during a busy contest week, and the penalties escalate quickly above the legal limit rather than staying modest. It is not a rule worth testing on a rental car in an unfamiliar country.

Parking at the arena
Assume you cannot park at Arena Burgas on a show night. Public parking allocation for the event has not been published, and event allocations are typically small once production, media and accredited parking are set aside.
